The medicinal use of juniper was first documented in the Middle Ages, when juniper branches were smoked on street bonfires to combat plagues. Preclinical tests showed its antiseptic/antimicrobial and antifungal effects, i.e. it showed an antioxidant effect. It produced a significant analgesic response in experiments. Juniper is primarily used externally to reduce muscle pain, rheumatic joint complaints, and in rubs. In addition, they are considered to promote digestion, relieve spasms, and soothe the bronchi.
