The name Santal comes from the Sanskrit word "chandana", meaning "white, bright like the moon, fragrant". One of the most ancient plants, sandalwood, has been used for thousands of years in ancient India for ritual purposes, and it also had a spiritual use in ancient Egypt. Many scientific researches were also carried out. For example, research at Brigham Young University has documented its ability to inhibit the growth of certain types of cancer cells. In 1979, Australian sandalwood extract was shown to be highly effective against serious bacterial infections, so it is antimicrobial. In Ayurvedic medicine, sandalwood is especially used for its cooling and calming effect on the nervous system, as well as for the treatment of anxiety.
